First of all, lets take a look into the Google Account Management system. Your Google account under the university domain (au.edu) is originally managed locally in the university’s servers and then synchronize to the Google system. To make it easy, let's say that every university member has three accounts, one is the university account, one is Google account, and one is Office 365 account.
The status of your account (active or inactive) and password are managed only from the local system and then the information will be synchronized to Google and Office 365 automatically. However, for the system specific settings such as Google account settings and Office 365 account settings are managed separately.
